- Erection of the Ecclesiastical Province of Kota Kinabalu, raising the Diocese of Kota Kinabalu to an archdiocese, with Keningau and Sandakan as suffragan sees; Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop John Lee as the first metropolitan of the province.
