GIRM: To Foster Full, Active And Fruitful Participation In The Liturgy

photo

KOTA KINABALU(CS Online).- [Preceded by catechesis, the new GIRM to be fully implemented by November 29 - First Sundy of Advent].

Around 150 people turned up for the Kota Kinabalu Archdiocesan Liturgy Formation and General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) July 1-4 aimed at fostering not just an active and external but a more personal and interior participation in the liturgical life of the archdiocese.

The event, organised by the Worship Commission headed by Fr Cosmas Lee, involved all the clergy, religious and heads of parish liturgical ministries.

What was heard through the talks and parish group sharing of personal experiences was practised and celebrated during the three Masses and in the common celebration of the Divine Office (Morning and Night Prayer).

In his keynote address, Archbishop John Lee stressed the importance of the event:

"This gathering, however, is most important, for it deals directly and specifically with the very ground, source and summit of our holiness and Christian life - the sacred liturgy and the Eucharist," he said.

The aim of the liturgy formation, he continued, is personal and fruitful participation in the liturgy.

Our aspirations for the formation, the archbishop said, is "that the saving power of the Lord's paschal mystery in the Eucharist overflows into and transforms our daily life; that more and more we experience participation in the action of Jesus' sacrifice to the Father in the Holy Mass as the ultimate purpose and goal of our own life."

To achieve this it is critically important to know and appreciate the "what" and the "why" (theology and spirituality) of the saving event rather than just the "how" (rubrics) of the rites.

He also touched on appropriate attitude and focus, holy things to holy people, parish pastor and liturgy ministry and the implementation of the GIRM.

The inputs given during the formation were:
(1) State of worship life in the archdiocese (by Neil Mah),
(2) Celebration of the Eucharist (by Neil Mah),
(3) Liturgical Ministries (by Neil Mah),
(4) Theology of the Eucharist (by Athanasius Wacky Taim),
(5) Spirituality of the Eucharist (by Fr. Lee),
(6) Liturgical Signs (by Fr. Lee),
(7) Introduction to GIRM (by Fr. Lee).

Each input was followed by parish group sharing, each led by its respective parish priest.

Written questions from the floor were answered on the last day.

The Malaysian GIRM with adaptations was approved by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on 5 June 2008 and came into effect on 1 January 2009 as the norm of celebrating the Eucharist in the region.

The GIRM is not just a list of "guidelines" as some individuals and even priests think; it contains NORMS that all must follow.

The many minor changes (most of which were existent but now imposed as norms) are attempts to restore the dignity and significance of the Eucharist as the sacred source, centre and summit of all Christian life.

Many consider the GIRM as return to conservatism and traditionalism.

Rome, however, has seen the do-it-yourself approach in the last 40 years (so-called "adaptation" and "inculturation") as grave danger to reduce the Holy Mass to become just another secular event and not the celebration of the awesome mystery of our salvation - a deposit of faith She must faithfully keep for the sanctification of humankind and the world.

All parishes have been given copies of the GIRM and taught on how to use it optimally.

Since no one can know by heart all the 399 instructions, priests and leaders have been asked to continue studying it, and to plan and implement the GIRM each in their respective parish.

However, all parishes should complete the implementation by the First Sunday of Advent this year.

Archbishop Lee insisted on the importance of catechesis for the people before implementation.

Dontozidon Celebrates 40 Years As Parish Community

photo

DONTOZIDON(CS Online).- It was a sunny morning that greeted the 700 parishioners June 28 as they gathered to celebrate their 40th anniversary as a parish community.

In his homily, Archbishop John Lee linked the readings of the day based on the theme of Jesus as the Giver of Life to the celebration itself.

After the homily, both the archbishop and Msgr Primus Jouil administrated the Sacrament of Confirmation to 50 candidates.

Deacon Rayner Bisius was present to assist the presider at the celebration.

After the Mass, speeches were given by Organising Committee Chairman Carfester Mokujin, Parish Pastoral Council Chairman Hermes Sikajat, Msgr Jouil and Archbishop Lee.

In his speech, the archbishop recalled that it was Mill Hill Father Willibrord Smit who started the parish 40 years ago.

He also reminded the parishioners of the elevation of the diocese to an archdiocese a year ago.

More importantly, the archbishop stressed on the conversion experience of their patron saint, St Paul, and the subsequent missionary zeal of the saint.

After the Mass, the parishioners including YB Tan Seri Bernard Dompok, adjourned to the church hall where the launching of the yearlong celebration took place.

To mark the launching at the entrance to the exhibition tent before the hall, the archbishop cut the ribbon to unfurl the banner depicting the occasion tied to a bunch of balloons.

Lunch was served after the cake-cutting ceremony and presentation of souvenirs to the confirmands, past and present PPC chairmen.

The parishioners and guests were entertained by the winning choirs of the choir competition (eight choirs) the night before based on the parish celebration theme: Make My Word Your Home.

The winners were KUK Mogoputi (champion), KUK Kobusak (first runner up) and KUK Nosoob Baru (second runner up).

Other choirs which took part in the competition were KUK Koidupan, KUK Nagasiba, Dontozidon Parish Choir and the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) Choir.

In times past Dontozidon was a forested area where cattle was brought to graze and where children could play "Tarzan" swinging from one tree to another with the help of creepers hanging down from the trees.

It was also an area where immigrants from Shantung Province, China, settled down.

In the 1950s and 1960s, some of the missioners who evangelised the area were Frs Gerard Preyde, Anthony Antonissen, Joseph Dapoz, Georg Lampe, Arnold Verhoeven and Willibrord Smit from St Michael Penampang and Frs Tobias Chi and Aloysius Tung from Sacred Heart Karamunsing.

It is interesting to note that since 1953 this area has become some sort of a "holy" site with the residence of Bishop Buis (now Loreto Generalate), the novitiate of the local Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (now Archdiocesan Retirement Home for Clergy & Religious) and the Daughters of St Paul's convent (now the Archbishop's Residence) located there.

In 1967 when Fr Smit started to build a proper church in Dontozidon just below the convent of the Daughters of St Paul, the Sisters requested him to name it after St Paul the Apostle. The church was blessed and opened for services on Easter 1969.

Its fruitfulness is seen in the number of vocations it has given to the local Church: La Salle Br Justin Mobilik, Frs William Poilis and Johnny Raju, FSIC Srs Grace Deosing, Cabrini Mobilik, Patricia Loo, Dorothy Aron, Anne Marie Lojingau, Gerard Chong, Jacinta Majalang and CSE Br Tereso Marie.

Sibu Hosts Annual RCSC Meeting

photo

SIBU(CS).- This year Sibu hosted the annual Regional Commission for Social Communication Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei (RCSC) Meeting June 22-23 at its diocesan pastoral centre.

For one and a half-day, 16 representatives from the various dioceses in the region met to report and discuss their work in the fields of communication in their respective dioceses.

This year however, the commission welcomed some new members: Bishop Cornelius Sim of Brunei who took over from Archbishop Murphy Pakiam of Kuala Lumpur as episcopal president, Fr James Chambers mhm who was newly appointed as head of the Sibu Communication Commission, John Ng and Terrence Ngui as representatives of Melaka-Johor and Sandakan Dioceses respectively.

The commission also welcomed Albert Hwong of Brunei and Patience Wong of Sibu as observers.

On the agenda of the meeting was a review of the RCSC Constitution.

One founding member told the representatives that the constitution has never been adopted since it was drafted 12 years ago.

So the members went through the articles on the role and functions of the organisation.

Suggestions were proposed for amendments but the adoption of the constitution would be done at the next meeting to allow more time for the members to go through it more thoroughly.

Father Chambers, 46, a Mill Hill Missionary from London, shared with the commission his reflection on children, justice, peace and environment based on his missionary work in Pakistan with bonded labourers and sweeper communities (1993-2004).

He went for a licentiate course on missiology at the Pontifical University of Sto Tomas Manila (2004-2007).

In May 2008, Chambers came to Sibu and was posted to Kanowit.

Through his powerpoint presentation, he showed the commission that poverty is relative, depending on the situation.

Poverty in Pakistan is different from that in the Philippines and again different from that in Malaysia.

The members also viewed two films on communication after dinner followed by a movie forum.

Although it has been proposed years ago that a study day be part of the regional meeting, it was only during this meeting that it was carried out.

Next meeting will be held in Brunei on 22-25 June 2010.

Tuaran Organises Retreat On "overcoming Weaknesses"

photo

TUARAN(CS).- St John Tuaran organised for the first time a retreat on "overcoming weaknesses" June 19-21 at the church premises.

Over 300 parishioners turned up for the event jointly organised by the different groups (Catholic Charismatic Renewal [CCR], Komuniti Tritunggal Mahakudus [KTM], Secular Franciscan Order [SFO], Legion of Mary [LOM] and the Catholic Women's League [CWL]).

The retreat was facilitated by the Putri Karmel Sisters and Carmelitae Sancti Eliae Brothers of Kaingaran Tambunan, headed by Sr Geraldine Joseph.

The seven sessions focused on overcoming (1) pride; (2) adultery; (3) greed; (4) jealousy and laziness; (5) anger; (6) self-love and (7) temptation.

The talks were followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, counselling and confession.

In his homily at the opening Mass, Fr Thomas Madanan encouraged all the participants to open their spiritual minds, focus on Jesus in faith and believe in the Holy Spirit living within them so that the retreat would be meaningful.

Father Nicholas Stephen, who had just returned from a pilgrimage in the Philippines and Rome, presided over the closing Mass.

He stressed in his homily that the Eucharist is the bond between Christ and us and that Christianity is meaningless without faith in Jesus who sacrificed himself for our sins.

He added that weaknesses can be overcome when we humbly admit our wrongdoings and seek reconciliation with God.

At the end of the retreat, the participants were invited to share their testimonies.

One of the participants, Justin Godomon, shared:

...For so long I was just a Catholic who only attended Holy Mass merely to fulfill my Christian obligation...

But after hearing the talks and ...surrendering myself to Jesus during the adoration, my life as a Catholic is reborn ...

Therefore, I am truly thankful and praise the Lord for this retreat which has really touched my soul and has given me so much inspiration through continuous prayer. I would surely share this new experience with my family and friends.

AHDC Conducts Consultation On Children/youth Realities

photo

PENAMPANG(CS).- In an effort to understand the realities of the children and youth in East Malaysia, the Archdiocesan Human Development Committee (AHDC) organised an initial consultation at the Catholic Pastoral Centre Penampang June 12.

Around 30 persons who are involved in education (formal and informal) of the young from the three dioceses took part in the consultation.

In his reflection, La Salle Brother Anthony Rogers said, "Without education there can be no transformation in the minds and hearts of the young."

There is a loss of inner identity, an inner fragmentation in the young, he continued.

In order to help the children and youth to rediscover their dignity and right, we will begin with seeing the relationships between what is happening in the world and the impact on those that we are pastoring to, especially children, youth and their families. We will begin with the life realities of our people so that with this understanding we can make a difference to their lives as Church, he explained.

The participants were asked to reflect individually on the parable of the Good Samaritan and then shared their insights on it.

Among those present who have experiences in working with children and youth either in school or outside the school were La Salle Brother Justin Mobilik (Kuching), La Salle Brother John D'Cruz (Nabawan), Chin Poh Choo (Pusat Kebajikan Good Shepherd Sabah) and Claudia Lasimbang (Pacos Trust).

The participants were divided into four groups for sharing of their awareness and analysis of the challenges/concerns facing the young today and of their reflection and understanding of their educational services through their respective (organisations/institutions) to the young people on the margins or outside the formal education system.

The reports were later presented to the assembly.

In his concluding session, Rogers said there is a need to develop the concept of holistic education through a system of nurturance based on a common understanding of education, approaches/methodology, policies, pedagogy and new mechanisms of implementation.

DPWG Holds Final Meeting

photo

LAHAD DATU(CS).- The Sandakan Diocesan Pastoral Working Group (DPWG) held its fifth and final meeting at the Parish Meeting Room of St Dominic's Church Lahad Datu June 6.

Eighteen representatives comprising clergy, religious and lay leaders of the four parishes attended the meeting.

In his reflection on the gospel reading (Mk 12:38-44), Bishop Julius Gitom said that the widow is a projection of the poor, vulnerable and a nobody in society set against a background of the rich, powerful and influential.

Just like the widow, the bishop commended the members that they had given their best to the DPWG, contributing the little they had.

What matters most, he continued, is the desire for selfless service through humility and love, and above all, a gift given out of love in a spirit of generosity and sacrifice.

The bishop recalled that the DPWG formed on 19 June 2008 was to meet the pastoral thrust of the diocese in establishing at the grassroot level the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs).

In the process of setting up BECs, a demographic survey was carried out in all parishes.

The census was also aimed at gathering data and statistics as a concrete basis to tailor the pastoral programmes for the diocese.

Pilis Malim briefed the members about the newly created web-based statistical programme which can now be accessed through www.sandakan.bravehost.com.

The diocese is in the process of planning and preparing for the coming Aug 29-31 BEC seminar at St Mary's Cathedral.

The DPWG had successfully drafted the PPC Constitution which was adopted for use in the diocese.

The constitution was also translated in Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese, which after editing, will be compiled and sent to all the parishes.

The DPWG had also come out with the guidelines for the selection of new PPC members which the parishes followed to get the PPC in place during the Easter season.

A formation seminar for all PPC members will be held this Nov 27-29.

The bishop announced that the diocese is in the planning stage of constructing and completing the proposed Diocesan Centre and Retreat Centre at the St Mary's Cathedral compound and Mile 25 Labuk Road respectively.

The diocesan head invited the lay faithful through the parish pastoral council to look into the needs and requirements of both centres so that good proposals can be incorporated into the plan of the said project.

The bishop extended his appreciation to all the members who had given a hand in the DPWG and then he officially declared the DPWG dissolved.

According to the diocesan plan, the Diocesan Pastoral Council will be formed within the year with all PPC chairpersons as members together with four other lay people, representatives from the clergy and religious. Official letters to the effect will be sent soon to all concerned.

The bishop also held a brief dialogue with the neophytes who had earlier shared about their experiences in becoming Catholics.

The night before, the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) had an exchange of views with the bishop during a dinner at the parish canteen.
